Indigo Airlines will start a daily direct non-stop flight from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport Amritsar to Goa with effect from 10-November-2021. Yogesh Kamra, convener of the FlyAmritsar Initiative and Secretary Amritsar Vikas Manch (NGO), stated that Indigo, India’s largest low-cost carrier, has begun accepting reservations for this direct nonstop flight on their website https://www.goindigo.in. Flight 6E-6064 would depart Amritsar at 10:30pm and arrive Goa Dabolim airport past midnight at 1:35am. The flight from Goa, 6E-6065, will be operated by a different aircraft, departing at midnight 12:05am and arriving in Amritsar early morning at 3:10am.
Kamra explained that due to slot difficulties at Dabolim Airport in Goa during the day, the airline has chosen for red-eye (late night) operations. We had requested airlines, as well as Goa and Amritsar Airport management, to review this flight schedule; however, upon pursuing the matter with the Goa Airport Director Sh. Gagan Malik, I was informed that the landing/take-off slots at Goa Airport leave no buffer for airlines to operate new sectors during the day.
According to Kamra, this sector has a long-standing demand from both domestic and international travelers and will help Amritsar’s tourism economy grow. Goa attracts not only domestic Indian tourists, but also international tourists, particularly from Europe and Russia. In order to make these direct flights popular, the Punjab Tourism Department should play an active role and make sincere effort to attract international tourists to Punjab through special discounts, incentive schemes, and promotional activities.
Kamra added, Chandigarh Airport has been offering special incentives to airlines which operate new sectors especially past midnight thereby resulting in more new connections from their airport. If Punjab government plans such initiative, not only new flights, a great number tourism and hospitality employment opportunities can be created as a result of this program.
The Global Convenor of the Fly Amritsar Initiative, Sameep Singh Gumtala, said that Amritsar and Goa, both are the most popular tourist destinations, and the launch of this new route by Indigo would help boost the economy and tourism industry in both the cities, Amritsar and Goa. Gumtala, a resident of USA said that when NRIs visit Punjab, they all express a wish to visit one of India’s beach destinations, such as Goa, and this nonstop trip from Punjab will get them to the seaside in around three hours.
Gumtala added that Amritsar administration should resume bus service started under BRTS from Airport to Darbar Sahib without any further delay. He also appealed to Punjab Transport Minister Amarinder Singh Raja Warring to immediately start bus service from other cities in Punjab to the Airport.
Satchit Gupta, an avid traveler and member of FlyAmritsar said “This flight will also provide convenient one-way connections from Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad to Amritsar via Goa. Since winters are a peak season for travel to Goa, this flight is expected to get a good response”
