Ten International Flights Depart In A Day, Three Non-Stop To Rome
As India continues to recover from the 2nd COVID-19 pandemic wave that hit the country hard in April-May, more and more countries across the globe are now reopening its borders for international travellers from India. With this, the international traffic of Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar has once again started to bounce back.
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar recently added a another historical first to its credit when three non-stop flights departed from the airport to one of the most historical cities in the World, Rome in Italy, also known as the Vatican City, in a single day.
According to the data obtained from FlightRadar24, a global flight tracking service, the airport handled three non-stop flights for Rome on September 15th.
Two of the flights departed for Rome were on a Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft by Air India and Neos Air, with 256 and 359 seats respectively. While the third flight was operated by SpiceJet, with its Boeing 737, with a refuelling stop in Kutaisi.
The airport has been handling a number of charters flights by SpiceJet and Neos Air to Rome and Milan in Italy since the Italian Government relaxed the restrictions for travel from India on August 31. Air India also had resumed its scheduled once-weekly non-stop flights between Amritsar and Rome on September 8th.
The airport previously also had handled multiple non-stop flights to Italy, with over three flights departing for Rome and Milan in Italy in a single day.
The overwhelming response to the direct and charter flights to Italy from Amritsar also strengthens and justifies our demand for the past many years, said Sameep Singh Gumtala from the FlyAmritsar Initiative, working for better air connectivity for the holy city. The traffic between Amritsar and Italy is experiencing a big increase since the resumption of direct flights. After the UK, Italy is home to the second highest Punjabi diaspora in Europe. For the past many years, we are demanding direct flight to Rome and Milan with Air India. But few years ago, Air India instead of starting direct flight from Amritsar to Italy, started them from Delhi. The operation of these flights, strengthens justification of our demand. Air India should increase frequency of Rome flight from one-weekly to at least 4-weekly flights, said Gumtala.
It was after a long time that on September 15, a total of 10 international flights departed from the airport in a single day. This includes 3 non-stop flights to Rome, 4 non-stop flights to the UAE (3 to Dubai, 1 to Sharjah) and the other 2 special charter flights to Belgrade with a technical refuelling halt at Istanbul, Turkey and Yerevan, Armenia that further connected passengers with flights to Toronto, Canada.
Currently Amritsar is directly connected with over 7 international and 9 domestic destinations including, London, Birmingham, Rome, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Delhi, Mumbai, Srinagar, Patna, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Nanded.
